Technical information

General descriptions of terms associated with the different types of foundations ANCHORPILE constructs based upon engineers’ designs and Building Code compliant specifications:

Slab foundation - A flat concrete foundation that sits on the ground, sometimes referred to as a slab-on-ground foundation;

Waffle pod - (or Ribbed Raft Slab). An engineered slab design that has a grid of internal beams built around polystyrene pod formers. This design typically has the characteristics of high strength and thermal efficiency; (please see photo in our Examples of recent projects section.)

Reactive soil; ANCHORPILE makes use of a Australian designed, patented product now made in SA as part of ANCHORPILE’s

interest in reducing transport costs for this light weight material.

Zone of influence - this term is used by geotechnical engineers describing the local soil conditions.

Void former – a structure not unlike a flat or shallow box, e.g. made out of collapsible cardboard, that builders use to create a void between the soil and the concrete foundation in areas in areas where there is reactive soil; Anchorpile makes use of a Australian designed, patented product now made in SA as part of Anchorpile’s interest in reducing transport costs for this light weight materials.

Definitions presented here for the lay person:

Footing - A structural element that typically consists of concrete construction in either strip or pad form or that is incorporated into the design of a concrete slab;

‘SLOG’ -stands for “Slab on ground” and is the software designed by Dr Peter Mitchell, Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer, URS Australia P/L, that our engineers may use. “SLOG is a computer program for Professional Engineers who want a fast, easy and convenient method of analysis of the soil structure interaction of footing on reactive (or expansive) soils. SLOG is used for analysing residential stiffened rafts, strip footings and waffle rafts in accordance with the AS 2870-1996 “Residential slabs and footings” design procedure by engineering principles.” (Source: www.slog.net.au)
